Mantis by AudioThing
Vintage BBD Echo
Mantis is an analog-modeled echo plugin inspired by a rare and characterful bucket-brigade delay unit from the early 1970s. It captures the unmistakable warmth, movement, and musical imperfections that made classic BBD hardware a favorite alternative to bulky and fragile tape echoes.
At the core of Mantis is a multi-tap echo section with four taps and four swell selectors, allowing complex rhythmic patterns and evolving repeats. The sound remains rich and organic, ranging from tight slap-back echoes to darker, more atmospheric delay textures that sit naturally in a mix.
A standout feature is the Rotafaze section, a modulation stage capable of subtle wow and flutter effects similar to tape echo, or deeper modulation that transforms the delay into a unique chorus-delay hybrid. This adds depth and motion without sacrificing the vintage character.
Mantis is built around the behavior of eight TDA1022 BBD chips, components often associated with shorter but more precise analog delays. In Vintage mode, the base delay reflects the constraints of the original hardware, where delay time directly affects frequency response—brighter at fast settings and progressively darker as the delay increases. This natural tonal shift is a key part of the classic BBD sound.
For greater flexibility, Mantis also includes a Modern mode that removes the original timing limitations. This mode allows delay times of up to one second, with free adjustment or tempo synchronization to your DAW, while retaining the overall analog feel.
Available for macOS, Windows, Linux, and iOS, Mantis supports all major plugin formats and can be used both in the studio and on mobile devices. Whether you are looking for authentic vintage echoes or expressive, modulated delay effects, Mantis delivers a distinctive and musical take on classic BBD technology.
